I am not new to encoding having done several hundred DivX 3.11 alpha and Xvid. Primarily with GKnot and FlaskMPEG. Audio has been MP3 @ 192 kbps.

With the tremendous quality gains using current day x264 and Nero AAC encoders, I have decided to start redoing the entire DVD collection (about 350 DVDs to be backed up to hard disk). I don't know whether I will be able to finish this as I have recurrent bladder cancer.

I am having audio sync problems that appear on 70% of my encodes (apparently randomly and on DVDs that had no probs at all with Gordian Knot and Xvid.

I have been using StaxRip. I have read the guides on your site (excellent for their day), and sifted through hundreds of posts. I am very disinclined to ask for any help because I don't wish to be publicly humiliated and told to go back to doing what has frustrated me deeply for two weeks.

I realize that everyone's time is valuable but mine is not worthless to me either. This site is intimidating in it's complexity.

My suggestion is this: how about a forum for newbie questions that aren't repulsed. Call it "Newbie Forum," "Stupid Newbies Only," "There are no stupid questions, only inquisitive idiots," whatever. Have it moderated by idiots like me, or even unmoderated.

I just need some help

Don`t worry about it,we are all here to learn & help where our knowledge permits..and to state the standard quote
"The only stupid question is the unasked one?"

And to echo Kurt ,welcome to Doom9 forums.

As kurt pointed out, we do have a newbies forum... but since we also have a bunch of forum rules, having it unmoderated would be a disaster.

And this is a forum for advanced users.. we like people to not only come around for a quick fix, but stay here, take in all the information you can get (there's a lot), and then spread that knowledge by helping others.

Once upon a time I was a newbie, too, but being intimidated actually helped to motivate me.. even today, when I'm the new guy someplace, I know I have to first prove myself worthy of the time of others.. and that means establishing your position from the getgo. But if you take a methodical approach to it (explain what you are trying to achieve, how you are trying to achieve it, what doesn't work and what you have tried as a workaround/solution), you'll find that you are much more likely to get help than if you just post "it doesn't work". The more you follow these rules and start off with a post that leaves no one wondering if you have done your homework, the less likely are you to encounter a hostile response, even if you're new to something. If the grumpy old-timers see that you are honestly making an effort, they are more likely to help you even if you appear to be making deadly mistakes. The worst thing you can do is give people the impression that you are not trying at all - you might have picked up a few buzzwords in a TV show and think that's all you need to get started. If you explain why you think you need to do something in a particular way (reference places where you got your information from, and then explain why you came to the conclusion you need to do things the way you're doing them) it always helps your case.
