Xvid vs DVD5 (quality)

Hi!

I know there is already a topic about this, but it is rather old and without any real useful information.

So, which one would be a smarter thing to do, considering only quality? I use GK with XviD, do 2pass encodes with default matrices (due to standalone compatibility). 1400MB is my minimum size (go with 700MB only in rear cases), tend to keep the audio intact AC3 5.1 or 2.0 (depends on the source) and use DVD9 sources.

On the other hand, I can go with shrinking to DVD5, keeping all the menus and extras, removing all audios except original one (DTS removed also). Menu and extras are encoded with lowest quality. Of course, with a DVD9 sized over 7GB, I look to keep only the interesting extras to have as much space for the main movie. (BTW, which program should I use for shrinking. Usually use Nero Recode - I know it is far from the best).
After the encoding is over, I add a custom subtitle to DVD5, of course preserving all the menus.

Please give me your advices!

Can’t be answered because it depends on at least a million things.

– movie length
– movie complexity
– shrinking method
– amount of necessary shrinking
– size of menus/extras
– Xvid config
– Xvid size
– playback environment
etc.

If you aim for SAP compatibility you already have another restriction besides quality. ;) Looking only at the size/quality ratio Xvid wins because usually you can perfectly fit 2 Xvid movies on a DVD-5 with at least near transparent quality. That’s virtually impossible with shrinking.

if u think time of encdg is important-try nero recode because it gives a ligtning speed of more than 150fps for a normal film.

if u think size of enc is important-try with xvid but hell slower for me <20fps

but i think u should go for xvid-2pass becoz in my experience it gives superior quality than mpegs at lowering bitrates.some prblms i found r with fps of enc video and async subtitle.(hope it may not be in ur case)
