View Full Version : Intermittent Audio

Hi All,
thankfully I haven't had many problems with RB that I haven't been able to resolve on my own, but there is one that is now annoying me.
I am transferring my VHS to DVD (Well, trying to) so I bought a dedicated VHS/DVD Recorder which records onto DVD+R or DVD+RW. So, I've decided to record onto the RW so that I can remove the lousy looking menu with "Backup Mode (Movie Only)" before I put it onto an R.
When I do this however, I loose the audio at times throughout the recording. When I play the original RW, the audio is there through the entire movie.
I have tried doing it with 0% compression and also by forced re-encode.
I'm currently using Pro v1.26.5 but this also happened in previous versions.
Thanks!

Can you tell me what kind of audio it is? My guess is that it is either MPEG audio or LPCM -- but it would be helpful to know.

Going by the "Audio Streams to Keep" window in RB it is Audio_01 2 Ch, MPEG-1, Unk

The audio appears to get out of snyc (And the video gets jittery also) just before a chapter mark and after the chapter mark there is no audio at all.
The easiest way to solve this I guess is to turn off chapter creation, but I want the chapters there..
There is a "Make Compatible" option on the recorder which I have tried, but this does nothing different.
Thanks for your time.

It sounds a lot like the bitrates are exceeding maximums. Do you have any unusual settings in your REBUILDER.INI file?

Nothing different to what I usually use, I've pretty much just installed RBP and the only settings I change are via the menu and are compression (HC or None) and how much to rob the extras by and that's pretty much all the 'tweaking' I do..

jdobbs, any ideas? I've tried different encoders, no compression, with and without menu's, etc but it all ends up the same, after the chapter mark there is no audio.

There's no MPEG audio on any DVD-recorders, even on Philips. It's either AC-3 2ch or LPCM 2ch (if any, and only in its highest quality setting). Philips also manufactured a DVD recorder that could do AC-3 5.1.
I would first copy the files onto the HDD before editing them in any software. The best "ripper" for SAP DVD recorders still remains Tmpgenc Dvd Author (it manages even Panasonic, this tells everything).

I'm pretty sure my ILO DVD recorder uses MPEG audio by default, not sure about the Sony -- I'll have to check.

My Cyber Home also uses MPEG audio.

No, you must be right, I was thinking of Sony, Pansonic, Pio, JVC etc., you know, the giants. I remember now that LiteOn (the standalones) also has MPEG audio. MPEG licences are much cheaper than Dolbys', so most cheap devices probably have MPEG.
@Rassilon: have you tried TDA before runing it though RB?

It could be an issue were the dvd recorder sets the maximum bit-rate to an illegal value (higher then 9.8Mbs i think). The actual max bitrate may be lower so patching the file is a possibility. This happens on my Samsung vr330 combo unit.
