Correct Resolution for Anamorphic widescreen 16:9 dvd?

Hello,

I am ripping a dvd that has a resolution of 720x480, but it is supposed to be at 16:9. What resolution should I resize it to when I rip this dvd? Or should I just encode it at 720x480 and flag that it is anamorphic widescreen in my container format? (MKV has an option for this)

Flagging it is almost certainly the best option.

If you stretch to fit the ratio, you waste bits. If you shrink, you lose image quality.
