As the thread name suggests, how well does the latest builds with the experimental patches scale to say.. 4 or 8 cores? I'll be purchasing a dual socket server motherboard along with a Quad core come Christmas, and I'd like to know how well it would scale up to 4 (and 8 when I drop another one later down the road) cores please!

Thank you :)

With the new x264 patch, it supports 4 and 8 cores just fine. Just make sure you use a build like Cef's and you should be fine.

I think the patch is called "thread pool" or something like that.

@akupenguin: is the thread pool patch ready to be committed to the SVN?

I use a plain SVN build from x264.nl (http://x264.nl/) and I already get ~100% CPU load on my Core2 Quadcore.
No idea about 8 cores, but 4 cores seem to get maximum load even without that patch...

The thread pool patch is only really useful for more than 4 cores and resolutions where the source can't feed frames to the encoder fast enough, D1 or lower being the prime examples for where that patch comes in useful.

Hmm, alright thanks. I was getting the 8-core system because I wanted to be for the move to HD resolutions and my system is really choking on slightly higher than 720p resolutions at the moment (1536x656, about 80k more pixels than 720p.) At similar to 720p res, I can encode at maybe 2 or 3 fps, and hopefully I can get at least 8 fps after the upgrade.
