View Full Version : trouble burning wmv file to DVD

My grandparents recently went on a trip, and asked me to convert their miniDV recordings onto a dvd.

So I used a firewire cable, and Windows Movie Maker to convert 8 miniDVs (thats right...8 of them, took forever), and I did some editing, put them all together into 1 WMV file, which is about 6 hours in length, and approximately 5.5 gigs.

Now I seem to have hit a brick wall when it comes to burning this file to a dvd. I followed a tutorial written for Windows Movie Maker about saving the file to a DVI? format, but when i select that option, it said I needed 85 gigs, so I figured that was wrong.

I am assuming that I need to split this file up, into smaller sizes, which brings me to my questions:

1) Quality is not that big of a concern, VHS quality would make my grandparents happy. That being said, what size chunks should I split the 6 hour video into. Is it possible to do two 3-hour DVDs? (this would be ideal).

2) Is there a free software which will help me with this process. It seems that Windows Movie Maker has reached its limit. I am not looking for any advanced features whats so ever, I just want to split this big file into smaller chunks (depending on the answer to the previous question) and burn. Simple as that.

3) Lastly, I am assuming I need to use 4.7g DVD. Would I be able to burn the whole video to 1 DVD if I used a dual layer disc? I was told that some DVD players may not be able to read dual layer discs.

Thanks very much for your help!

Hi!

I believe the very easy to use (freeware) DVDFlick accepts WMV files (as well as many other vidoe formats) as input.

Once you've created a single, compliant DVD "package" (.IFOs, .BUPs, .VOBs), you can, if need be, always then use DVD Shrink to compress it...

I actually tried DVDFlick, and it doesnt let me split up my WMV file into smaller portions. I suppose this can be done seperately with Windows Movie Maker, so what I really need to know is the target length I should split the file into.
