View Full Version : Making CDs that will be readable in a DVD CD-i player.

I followed all the steps in the doom9 how-to guides. Using DVD2SVCD, I get some .bin and .cue files. I also get a LARGE .mpg file.

I burned the .cue/.bin images and the CD doesn't work properly. I used the full version of CDRWin that came with my CD-R. The CD can be read under Windows Explorer but it will not play in PowerDVD or MediaPlayer8.0. Actually it will play in PowerDVD but in FILE mode. This of course, excludes playing the CD in a DVD player that can play CD-Is or VCDs. I tried.

What am I doing wrong?

I guess your SVCDs are perfectly OK ... as playback via PowerDVD shows. To play it back as a disk natively, try another player like WinDVD or STSHVCD. WMP does not handle SVCDs per default ... if you have an appropriate filter installed, playback will work from WMP (in file mode of course).
CD-i compliancy has nothing to do with SVCD ... you can play back VCD on a CD-i player if an appropriate CD-i app was included on your VCD. To make VCDs, use another program ...
Also, make sure your DVD player is SVCD compatible ...

Well, my VCD plays in WinDVD and it will even play in WNM8.0 (WinXP) although in WNM the picture is stretched. I don't really mind since WinDVD and PowerDVD both work perfectly. My DVD player (Toshiba 5 tray DVD changer) plays my original CD-i of Star Trek Generations so it must play VCDs, er, right?

At any rate I'm quite happy with it playing on PCs since we have quite a bit of waiting time on the job, I play movies on the laptop while I wait. That's the primary usage I make of my backups. It does take a long time but the quality is incredible, I think they're at least VHS quality.

So far I've backed up my copies of Happy Gilmore and Gone in 60 Seconds. I'm ripping The Fast and The Furious today.

Thanks for the input.

I am not sure about the relationship of CD-i and VCD compatibility ... anyway, even if your Toshiba plays (pressed) VCDs, you still don't know if it plays CD-R or if it is SVCD compatible. Check out vcdhelp.com, some reports indicate that the Toshiba 5-disc-changers don't do SVCD :(. Also, remember that SVCD differs significantly from VCD (mpeg2 instead of mpeg1, higher resolution & bitrates etc.) - if a DVD player is VCD compatible (most are), this says nothing whatsoever about SVCD compatibility. In general, the cheaper the player, the more likely it is to be SVCD compatible.
Good luck ... if you are in doubt, there are SVCD sample images on the net (e.g. at www.vcdimager.org)to check your player's capabilities ... if you test, pls. submit it here in the dvd2vcd forum :).
