View Full Version : missing characters on subtitles ´ ` ç ^ ~

My DivX player is a DVD-P245 Samsung and when I watch a XviD with subtitles it doesn't display characters like these: ´ ` ç ^ ~ and they are replaced with a *, for example: "Olá" is displayed like this "Ol*"; "Caçar" -> "Ca*ar"... These characters are frequently used in portuguese. I did a firmware upgrade but it didn't solve this problem with the characters. The subtitles are .srt files.
What can I do to fix this problem?

Hi!
1) Do the subtitles appear correctly when you play the XviD on your computer? (They probably do, because your computer is probably set up to use a Portugese character set)
2) Did you open and read the .SRT file that you created, to see if the characters appear properly?
3) Does your Samsung player have Portugese as one of the language options in the "hardware setup" (or similar description)?

Try what setarip suggests, but If your DVD player can't read Unicode .srt subs you have a problem
My Philips DVDP 5980 reads .sub/.idx so I really don't have that problem, all languages and special characters are displayed perfectly
Best username ever BTW ^_^

1) Yes, subtitles appear perfect and correctly. Windows XP language is set to PT-PT (portuguese from Portugal).
2) Yes, characters appear properly on .srt file.
3) Hm, no. The player has this option: Language Setup > Subtitle > Automatic, English, Français, Deutch, Español, Italiano, Netherlands, Others. I tried to use Français (French) and Español (Spanish) which use some of those characters but the DVD player still doesn't display them.
I opened the subtitles with Microsoft Office Word to correct some spelling and I then saved the file, then I opened it with Notepad to correct some stuff and I saved the file with ANSI codification which is the codification used by default in Notepad.
Now my question is this: Should I use Unicode (or other) codification or my DivX player sucks?

I think you cannot use unicode in text subtitles for using in standalone.
Post a screenshot from your PC with correct subtitles and the same screenshot from your TV with the same subtitle line which is incorrect displayed.

@help
You might want to consider resaving your videos with permanent subtitles, rather than a separate file...

I don't like permanent subtitles. They're quite a bit better than incorrectly displayed separate subtitles - but, whatever floats your boat...

Try saving the subtitle as UTF-8, instead of ANSI.

Try to go in the settings of the player and set it in some Western Europe langauge which is available. Maybe spanish?

I tried everything...
The DVD/DivX player just doesn't recognize those characters from .srt files. It sucks. :(

The Ziova players will only display SRT, SMI, SSA and MicroDVD SUB subtitles saved to ANSI. However, I made damned sure the following letters could be displayed: -
Æ Á Â Ä Å ß Ç Ð È È Ë Î Ï Ñ Ö ð þ ×
æ á à ä â ã å ç é è ë ê í ì ï î ñ ó ò ö ô ø ú ù ü û µ ÿ

setarip_old is correct, the most reliable solution in this case would be to mux in permanent subtitles. Not the most elegant solution but it should work.
