Resizing DVD - ITU-R BT.601 with paranoia ..

I didnt exactly know where to put it and how to create the right topic title, but here it goes.

I encode allot of region 1 NTSC movies to XVID. To resize the movies, I usually use paranoia.

Paranoia has the option "Keep ITU-R BT.601". The problem I have is that I never know when to use it, and when not. In my search on the forums here I found out that most movies use it, so I usually keep it checked.

My question is, how can I be 100% sure if a movie uses ITU-R BT.601 or not?

When using DMPG Decode to create the d2v file, I often see ITU values in the colorimetry field (most of the time this is ITU-R BT.709 ?).

So, how can I tell when to use it and when not?

No, that option has nothing to do with any color conversion (Rec.601 versus Rec.709). It has to do with resizing:

(cropping 720x576 to) 702x576 -> 768x576 (Rec.601 checked) versus 720x576 -> 768x576 (Rec.601 unchecked) (for PAL)

so both use a different par for the resizing.

Nobody knows. Yes i know, that's not a satisfactory answer :)

The only way you can know for sure is to look for a round object in your dvd, and see which one of the resizing methods is correct for your dvd.

In this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1033447#post1033447) post, there is a quoted part that says that 99% of the recent Hollywood movies come without ITU-R resizing, other threads say that the option should be used in most cases (which means that most movies have ITU-R resizing).

Is there any good answer on that matter?

99% is a figure out of thin air, unless unskinnyboy can provide evidence for this. I haven't seen any evidence one way or another.

Of course, since everyone is going digital nowadays, there is no need for Hollywood studios to create their dvds ITU compliant. So it would make sense if most new dvds are not ITU compliant.
