x264 ballance btw quality and size

could you tell me what is the top notch Q number now for the good ballance btw quallity and size? Q-18? Q-23? Is it specific for each movie? The reason i'm asking is that i've got tons of DVDs and i want to back up them with x264 in propper manner.:thanks:

if you're looking something like Xvid's Q2 then x264 equivalent is Q18.
