At what bitrate is MPEG quantization suitable?

This comes under MPEG-4 ASP, but I predominantly use Xvid, so it goes here. Is there a defined bitrate where it becomes noticable to use MPEG quantization instead of H.263?

The answer is - no specific bitrate. Besides, it's not about the bitrate anyway, but about the average quantizer. The determining factor is the smoothness/ringing trade-off point. Try for yourself.

H.263 is very good in anime, 350MB encodes of TV shows, and most 700MB movie backups though. MPEG is good for high-quality encodes of material that still has lots of detail, like HDTV TV shows and DVDs.

Depends what your encoding.
I don't think I use mpeg quant for anything.

h263 for anime, low bitrate live action I use custom matrices, for high bitrate, same as low bitrate.

I kinda just skip over the default mpeg matrices I guess. :p
