yes that's my question:
Comparison of the video/audio quality between SVCD and DivX.

I have seen some guides of DivX and SVCD ripping and it was always told that the SVCD-way has a much more lower quality as a DivX Rip.
Is that true? And if yes how much less is the quality?
Or is it just a lie?

when asking questions of quality, you are always going to get opinion. try it for yourself, see which you like better.

and btw- you are asking us to compare apples to oranges.

divx can be played on a pc (maybe a mac too) and that is it.

svcd can be played on many, not all, stand alone dvd players. svcd needs a much higher bitrate, cause its mpeg2 (right?) and mpeg4v3 (divx) allows for much higher levels of compression.

each method has its pros and cons. its all about what you actually want to be able to do with your video files

Doing an audio comparison is imo, irrelevant, since there is no "DivX audio" (well, there is, but its Windows Media Audio v3, or something).

Then we'd have do to a visual quality estimation, that's not easy, especially then different people is involved.

But the codecs have a different strength. Div3 has some advantages in regards to noise, where DivX4 is good at smooth surfaces.

However you might disagree, and belive other things which makes it even more complicated.

Anyway, if I had to choose one (and only one) codec for future use, I'd choose the new DivX series, since it promises further development...

Its almost impossible to compare, but i would tend to say that when using 2 Pass VBR mode in TMPEG you can get very good results and a very normal movie may fit on 2 - 3 CDs in good quality. I even had up to 1 hrs on 1 CD for low motion movies like comedies ( video bitrate 1650 kbps, audio bitrate 160 kbps ) but this is the absolute minimum and quality was far from being excellent, impossible for action movies.

When comparing the two formats i would say there is a 'file size factor' ( or better : 'number of media factor' as a 700 MB CD may store 795 MB as SVCD ) of 1.5 - 1.7 between the two, means, that when comparing to a VBR 1 CD rip you can get similar quality on 1.5 to 1.7 CDs on SVCD.

In other words : a 2 CD SVCD ( VBR of course ) will be slightly better than a normal 1 CD rip ( VBR ). To get the quality of a 2 CD DivX rip you will need 3 - 3.5 CDs for SVCD, etc ...

This is without filtering ! MPEG4 will benefit more from using temp smoother than SVCD does, dont ask me why, so the factor will be bigger even if filtering is being used ....
