I assemble separate scenes from my DVDs into a new DVD that is a 5-10 minute re-edit of the film. (I use it to show certain themes of the film in a condensed way.)

I can rip and re-author, no problem, using DVD Shrink and ImgBurn. I can also merge all the separate titles into a single title to get the transitions to smooth out, using VobEdit and IfoEdit.

I'd like to take this to the next step if I can and do fades when I want them and even cross fades from one scene to the next. Is there anything short of a full-blown professional editing suite that will allow me to do this?

You might try avsFilmCutter. It's not very powerful compared to something like Vegas, but it's specially made for things like simple fades & crossfades. It helps to know some avisynth while using it, though.

It looks like Womble's MPEG Video Wizard DVD will do everything I need at this point. I'm not quite ready to jump into the AVISynth realm if I don't need to. Thanks to FOXYSHADIS for the suggestions.
