DSCaler and deinterlace filters

Hi,

I'm trying to capture from a cable TV source recording into the Huffyuv codec, I'm capturing full frame 576 lines. I seem to be getting a problem when playing back the video it seems blurred(or ghosting) when a scene pans from left to right or action scenes. If i record say a newsreader for example it seems fine.

I'm not sure whether i am using the best deinterlace setting but i mainly use TomsMoComp but when i try the others it doesnt seem any better.

The result of the recording also appears in my converted encodes into xvid avi using StaxRip. I don't think its anything to do with the staxrip part because if i encode from a dvd source its fine so its defo a DSCaler/Deinterlace/Huffy issue somewhere.

Has anybody come accross this issue? i know there are many settings it could be but i'm sure its something simple maybe with the Huffy codec?

I haven't used Dscaler for capturing, only for viewing TV, but I think if you capture full height (576) then it's still interlaced, so you need to deinterlace it afterwards.

This is true, even though is says its deinterlaced, it not. DeScaler is excellent for capture.

In fact it has no reliable detection and protection for framedrops.

VirtualVCR is much better in thsi regard.

I have set it to deinterlace in staxrip and that has solved the jaggedness that you get but not the motion blur i seem to be getting. Should I try capturing in VirtualDub then? or is the another program thats better?

What I find with dscaler is you dont need to keep changing settings to start a recording, just load it up and hit record.

VirtualVCR is good too, you need to take more time to learn DeScaler, I use it everyday.

It has the ability to save ini files for each type of video source, big time saver not reinventing the wheel over & over again, and the histagram filter allows you to set the best overall video levels, and much more.

Yes it has some pit falls, so does VirtualVCR, so don't use those features. Dropped frames, never, using either huff or ffdshow's "mjpeg" codec at 93% quality .

VirtualVCR allows you to save config-files.
Also it offers a histogram and much more.

Also scheduled capturing is possible with addons.

I learned Dscaler pretty well, cause I used it a lot in my analogue-cable days back then.
But it is mainly designed for Viewing not for capturing.
VVCR is more useful for capturing IMO.

But it may be a personal preference, too.

I haven't found anything better if you want to play and capture at the same time - for video games for example.

Don't deinterlace and use a format that supports interlaced encoding (MPEG-2 or AVC). If you must use deinterlacing try Yadif.

hmm, thats a thought, although i have ticked the deinterlace box i'm not sure sure which deinterlace method StaxRip uses and/or if theres anyway of changing it.
