What is the setting "Twopass - 2nd pass alt"? It's in the xvid build 1.2-127 dated 10 Mar 2007. I did a google search and a forum search on doom9 but couldn't find the answer anywhere.

It seems to me you're using an ancient (pre-2002) build?

Go to your windows/system32 and make sure you *don't* have xvid.dll. You should only have xvidvfw.dll, xvidcore.dll and xvid.ax.

xvid.dll is SO OLD but if you have it, it might be interfering with your modern build.

However, I am perplexed - where did you get that build from?

Are you sure BOTH your xvidvfw.dll and xvidcore.dll are from a "1.2-127" build?

The 'second pass alt' option (and the code it invokes) are in xvidvfw.dll - at least for all the builds I created and posted. And the only 1.2 based builds of xvidvfw I've posted were here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=998742#post998742) back in May, not March. (Those "hvs plugin" builds also included my '2nd pass alt' code.)

I also have that option, called "2nd pass alt", only did i realize this option was here is when i installed the latest K LITE CODEC PACK and on installation i selected the "lots of stuff" box.

Thanks for the pointer. I grabbed the current version of that codec pack and installed it as you directed (VMware is handy for this kind of stuff).

The two files are:
xvidvfw.dll 3/10/2007 282,624 bytes
xvidcore.dll 7/25/2007 1,559,040 bytes

It includes the MTK and Divx profiles, but doesn't include my XBMC profiles. It does not appear to have the HVS stuff (which makes sense given the March date). I also note it seems to have some SSE3 support (Encoder configuration -> Other options -> Common tab) - don't know where that came from...

I'm guessing it is a private build - the dates aren't from any files I posted, and the sizes are MUCH larger than any of my personal builds. I included the sources with my posts, so all I can conclude is someone did a 1.2.x version with my add-on incorporated, perhaps using the Intel compiler? (it seems to generate very large files).

Downloaded xvid.cvs.head.MTK.2007.07.25.7z and xvid.cvs.head.MTK.2007.03.10.7z from that location and the file sizes and dates within match!

never use codec packs! you never know what you get... most of the times, only crap...
as for the 2nd pass alt, yes, it's from the thread linked by plugh.
