I'm interested in buying a cheap DVD player for my TV that will play XVID format. I've seen a few advertised that play DIVX & somebody once told me that DIVX players will also play XVID. Does anybody know if this is the case? These are the two models I've been looking at:

As long as the Xvid encode conforms to the DivX specification, yes.
You'll want to have GMC off, for example, as Xvid uses 3 warp points and DivX uses one, so even if the DivX player supports GMC, it won't support Xvid's GMC.
GMC, Qpel, and B-frames are the only real variables here, and as long as you stick to what it supports Xvid will work fine.

Hi!Oy, if I only understood what you say! When you converted/compressed your original DVDs to XviD, did you use any or all of the following settings?:
B-Frames
QPel
GMC
If you didn't use ANY of those settings, the XviDs you've made should play properly on any standalone player that plays DivX-compressed videos.
If you did use ANY of those settings, there's a good chance you'll have problems playing them back on many DivX-compatible standalone players...

Actually, I was planning on downloading the movie clips, rather than encoding them myself.
If I were to encode them myself (ripped from DVD) I suppose I would just use DIVX in that case.

OK then let me rephrase my question:
I plan on encoding DIVX videos ripped from non-ecrypted DVDs which I own. If I want to play these on a standalone DVD player that plays DIVX, what needs to be done: is it just a matter of burning a data DVD with the DIVX files, or do I need to transcode and burn a disc as I would a DVD-Video, VCD, SVCD, etc...

Downloading and movies really don't mix here, I thought that was the best-known rule by now.
