View Full Version : Codec for virtualdub that is able for key I-frame's to go 1,2,3,4,...?

Hi,

What is a codec to use with virtual dub with or without changing settings for that codec to enable virtualdubs key I-frames to go 1,2,3,4,... without making the video a hudge size to make it easier for editing? Thanks! I tried xvid and was able to get it to work once by changing the configure, however, what I did before is not working now. THanks!

If you want a keyframe-only codec, you can use either a lossy codec like H.264 (works fine in AVI if you're using only I-frame, of course) and set the maximum keyframe interval to 1, or you can use something like Motion JPEG, or you can just use a lossless encoder like HuffYUV/Lagarith.

Hi,

Thanks! How do I get xvid to be H.264 because I looked in the settings it it says H.263? Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks! How do I get xvid to be H.264 because I looked in the settings it it says H.263? Thanks! What do you mean, "get Xvid to be H.264"? That's like saying "get my Ford to be a Toyota" or "get my apartment to be a townhouse". They're totally different things.

H.263 is the type of quantization matrix used; H.263 itself is, yet again, a totally different codec that Xvid is definitely not.

For H.264 encoding, the FFDShow Video for Windows encoding interface should be fine.

thanks

How do I get the keyframes to go 1,2,3,4, ... for I-frames in virtualdub? Thanks! Is there a better codec to use that does not take a hudge space and is there settings I need to change and how? Thanks!

By definition, any codec that uses only I-frames will use a whole lot of space.

As I said, use a codec like Xvid or DivX or H.264 or whatever and set the minimum keyframe interval to 1.

Hard Drives are cheap these days 500 GB for 100 buck and 1 TB for 250 buck, so it's really better to optimize such a framework for speed instead of compression and then Huffyuv still is the fastest real non intermediate lossless way :)

I got it to work before without taking up a lot of space with xvid by changing some settings, however, not able to remember how I did it and for 3 hours it only took up 3 gb which is small enough to fit a cd. How would I change the settings for the xvid to go 1,2,3,4,... or another codec without taking up a lot of space? Thanks

You cannot. Good compression is achieved by encoding frame differences (P- and B-frames) - video doesn't usually change much between subsequent frames; I-frames are full frames and thereby you cannot compress these so efficiently (or you lose all of quality).

But if you want try that in Xvid, then (like Dark Shikari twice noted already) set the maximum keyframe interval to 1.

Again: If you want to create an I-Frame (Keyframe) only video, you will be far better off with a format that was developed for that purpose, instead of MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid, DivX, etc). I'd recommend to use either Motion-JPEG (MJPEG) or FFv1. The latter is even 100% lossless...

You can encode/decode MJPEG or FFv1 in VirtualDub with latest ffdshow:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941&package_id=199416

// EDIT

Another option would be "H.264 lossless" with both, Max and Min IDR-Frame-Interval set to 1.
It will be slooooooooow, but give better (more efficient) compression than MPEG-4 ASP...

I tried ffshow codec and I could not get it to go 1,2,3,4,... in virtualdub with I-frames and I want audio and video also is there some settings in ffshow I need to set to get it work? If so what and how? Please and thank you!

Try a DV codec like Cedocida. It's free.

Under the encoder tab, select ffv1, huffyuv, dv, mjpeg, or lossless jpeg from the encoder list. All of those are keyframe-only. Consider something like mjpeg-2000 if you need to use a low bitrate and have a very powerful computer, also (morgan, leadtools, lurawave, and others make mj2k codecs, not free), since that's the most quality/size efficient keyframe codec available.

Or just use a low key distance like 5 or 10 in xvid if it's just seeking speed that's got you down, works good even for reversing video.

FFV1 actually does have a "Keyframe distance" option :p
It can be set to "1" in order to enforce keyframe-only, of course...

HI,

Thanks sooo much for all the help everyone!

I think I able to get codec Iframes to go 1,2,3,4,... sometimes if I am pressing the iframe button in virtualdub and not the next to mess up :(, however, I think it works sometimes and sometimes what I did before does not work even what did 5 mins ago to have the keyframes work, does not work 5 mins later it changes and works sometimes and I do not know how to fix it unless there is something I am missing in the options and it is not exactly the same that it was 5 mins ago? I thought maybe adding or taking away certian options to make better quality work have the key frames work and sometimes it changes and other times no?

If I where to pick H.264 codec what settings would I change to where the keyframes will go 1,2,3,4,...? Please and thank you!

:thanks:

Awari, please, pretty please, very gorgeous please, read the advice that has been given to you already, the name of the setting to change has been given to you at least 3 times already.

Pssssttttt, over here .... :p :
Find something called "Max I-frame interval" or "Keyframe interval" (or something else looking like it) and set it to .... 1 !

The parameter has a similar name for both x264 and XviD :]
