Is there any easy way to distinguish DVD-Video backups from those which are converted using MPEG-4 video as source (using some tool like ConvertXtoDVD) ?

The quality should not be same. As the MPEG4 is already compressed so by its nature it has already lost some of the video information available in the original source.

But there is any other way to check it, maybe using MediaInfo?

MediaInfo will only give you information about the file's Audio and Video codecs and other related information. You can always compare the results for the two files and see that you get what you desire. :)

You can sometimes tell because the grain is smoothed out or missing entirely, and fine details have been just wiped away, if it was done using a generic Deen script. There's absolutely nothing you could look at in the bitstream, though.

Hi!
Compare it/them to your original, commercial DVD.
Typically, when you've made a true DVD backup copy it will have the same Chapter times and same color/size/font as your original DVD...
On the other side of the coin, why would you first convert your original DVD to MPEG-4 and then back to standard DVD?

It was not converted. My brother gave me some DVDs with promo videos (trailers) and I want to know if he converted from MPEG-4 files or backed up from an original disc. I suspect he used some software like ConvertXtoDVD.

He says it is a backup from a promo DVD, but I doubt it. Never seen any promo DVD with trailers from different movie studios. Just want to make sure he didn't converted from MPEG-4.

Then the only thing I believe you can do is visually compare it to your brother's original promo DVD...
