Auto-Width or Fixed-Width

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is it better to use Auto-Width or Fixed-Width?

I prefer Fixed-Width because I can get it to just the size I want it, but it doesn't usually have the best quality, and quality, for me, is the most important aspect.

Does Auto-Width offer better quality, or should I just stick with Fixed?

You question can't really be answered effectively because there are many, many factors that determine perceived quality. You have to decide which fits your needs and preferences for quality. Some "answers" to help you decide:

Fixed width along with a preset filesize output will force a bitrate. If that bitrate ends up being too low, quality will suffer and you'll see blockiness. Auto width along with a preset filesize output can help reduce blockiness, but you may lose detail.

Both these are "quality" issues, and the simple fact is that you must choose the less bothersome to you.
