Dear all,

apologies if this is the wrong forum but hopefully someone will be able to help me navigate this minefield.

I have a PC in one room with some HD content e.g. HD movie trailers etc.

I want to get these files on my PC played on my HD TV in my other room....

I have considered purchasing a 15M DVI to HDMI converter and simply pushing the video output to the TV and then running a separate sound cable to my 5.1dvd players aux in connector, then I came across things like the Linksys HD player thingy which apparently will allow me to stream from my PC to it over wireless or ethernet...

This is where things get a bit murky. I bought an HD DVD recorder recently (or so I thought) only to find that it isn't an HD DVD player, but it will upscale...doh (what do you expect for £60 eh ?)...

What I want to know definitively is how can I play my HD content (MKV files) on my PC on my HD TV without spending a shed load of cash.

Is the best way 15M DVI to HDMI cable or will one of these players actually do what I want it to ?

It must give me an HD output, it's kinda frustrating when I have an HD TV but not HD DVD player and I'm not subscribed to any HD channels ;-0

Any thoughts anyone ?

thanks in advance.

well the simplest would be the dvi to hdmi cable. I have exactly that setup, albeit the same room. It makes life simple, if your PC can play it, then you can watch it and the picture should be very good.

if you get a media thing your stuck with whatever formats it can handle, which will probably be fine, but the PC is far more flexible.

if the long cables arent an issue, thats what i would go for.

ok I did an experiment.

I plugged my work laptop in to my hd tv via it's vga cable and played my hd content on the laptop...

This seems to give a really good picture, but I've no idea if that is actually HD or not...If I had a dvi to hdmi output would it be better?

The TV shows up as a second monitor, right? Just look at what the resolution of that screen is in display properties or your graphics driver.

dvi to hdmi yes it will have better color and no noise. but its not a lot better and if I had it setup with vga to vga then its pointless. if you playing from that is 720p res or higher its HD and if you got it set to 720p res or higher. most 3d cards let you set your out same res at your tv.
