Black colours coming out grey

I have a new install of Windows Vista. I've used VDubMod to save a bmp of a frame from a video, and I confirmed that the colour is black (RGB 0,0,0), but when I play through Media Player Classic it comes out grey (There's a clear contrast with the proper black from the black bars when I view in fullscreen).

I have MPC 6.4.9.0 using ffdshow (the video was XviD, but it seems to happen all videos). I'm using the VMR9 renderless for output.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Use RGB output in the filter. Use the decoder's TV->PC levels conversion if available, use ffdshow levels if not. Use overlay renderer, or if your driver just happens to do the conversion, use EVR.
