View Full Version : GordianKnot and the x264 encoder

Hello.
My GordianKnot isn't encoding in x264. I had found a post in the forums saying that re-installing the whole thing could fix it, but it didn't work. I did a full HDD format, clean windows reinstall, GK Full Install, GK Codec Pack Full Instal, and it still doesn't work.
The problem is that it just isn't there. When I click "First Pass" Or "second Pass" in the x264 area of the "Options" tab, nothing happens. It works fine for all other codecs. If I try an encode anyways, I get an immediate error.
I was able to fix this by installing the "Full K-Lite Codec Pack". However, I do not like this solution at all, as I don't really like K-Lite.
Does anybody know how else I can fix this problem. I usually use the CCCP, which is a playback-only Codec Pack. What do I have to look for to manually install the encoder? Is it a FFd show filter or something? What is it that the CCCP does not install that K-lite does? Or is it something else that should be configured?
Thanks for all and any help, or even for reading

You didn't have to instal the whole K-Lite codec pack just to get x264. But I've been using it without the GK Codec Pack and it works just fine... Try downloading the latest version of x264, you can find the link here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=89979)

You're not supposed to use x264 as a Video for Windows codec--the reason you had so much trouble finding it outside of the terrible K-Lite pack was because it is deprecated and not supported anymore for a number of reasons (most importantly x264 doesn't support Video for Windows properly to begin with!)
Use the command-line utility, which is available for download in a number of places, and there's a thread for the latest builds in the H.264 forum here at Doom9.

I kinda figured I didn't need the k-Lite. What I am a bit confused with is:
1. MKV toolnix doesn't complain about the whole "video for windows" when I mux my files. He used to before (about 1 year ago), but not anymore. My current files work just fine (although it's probably just a workaround...).
2. What is inside the K-Lite is not command line (I think. is it that VfW thing?). How do I integrate the command line encoder into GK?
This might be a complicated question, so if there is a faq out there for that...
Or should I stop using GK altogether (or at least for the encoding part, just use it for the avs scripts)?
I'm sorry if you've answered these questions a 1000 times, but this forum is so HUGE, the x264 post doesn't explain that much how to use it, and the doom9 tutorial just says "get the codec".
I user who thought he finally thought he was encoding correctly, and just landed on his face...
EDIT:
I just went here (http://deaththesheep.uni.cc/), from a link from that x264 thread. This appears to be the x264 VfW thing that I need. I tried it and it does solve my problem.
I am still interested in learning how to use the CLI version, and with GK if possible. If it is not, I'd probably be willing to put in some time to learn... If I am edged into a helping direction.
Thx

My current files work just fine (although it's probably just a workaround...).Muxing is not encoding. You don't need to even have the codec installed on your system to be able to mux.

You can't. GK is very outdated and is not meant for modern encoders. Try Staxrip, Ripbot264, MeGUI, Handbrake, or one of the various other x264 GUIs if you want to use x264.

The Video for Windows version there is highly not recommended as the bitstream created by it will cause, to say the least, problems. Video for Windows doesn't, for example, support B-frames, so the encoder has to use an ugly hack to let the decoder "guess" which frames are B-frames. And that's not the only problem :p
