There's nothing unusual indicated about the audio format.

What software, procedures, and codecs did you use to convert your original, commercial, PAL-format "Gothika" DVD to .avi?

Did not. It was downloaded. Forgot to mention that VirtualDub v1.7.4 had no problem with it.
