MPEG-2 in (editable) Quicktime?

I'm trying to figure out what is the most efficient workflow for editing DVD footage in Final Cut Pro.

AFAIK, FCP cannot natively edit MPEG-2, so I'd have to convert to Quicktime.
I wish there was a way to wrap MPEG-2 in a QT container which will be compatible with FCP. Of course this would require indexing so we would have frame accurate access (like DGindex?).
I don't mind recompressing a bit but I don't know which codec will be most efficient for editing on that Mac platform. I can't use Quicktime uncompressed or Animation because of storage limitations.

Any ideas, guys?

Hi, you can try editing MPEG-2 using Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html) or a commertial tool Capty MPEG Edit EX (http://www.pixela-1.com/capty_mpeg_edit_ex), and later import to FCP.

Thanks but unfortunately the editing is out of my hands, it must be done on FCP.
