I am backing up a dvd and the main movie is only 3.4gb in size. The extras consume 2gb more. Is it possible to NOT re-encode the main movie in DVD-RB, and just re-encode certain extras?

Yes, after doing a prepare, in the preview/edit tab, tick no re-encode for the segments you don't want encoded.
