Is there any advantage to using the burn from ISO option versus
IMG burn directly to disc?
Making the ISO file seems like a waste of time and extra hard drive wear.

No.

When this feature was implemented into RB in the past, ImgBurn wasn't able to burn directly to disc, you've had to create an image first.

One advantage of creating the ISO is that you still have it after the burn... for archiving, mounting, or making another backup. But if you are only making a single backup -- you'll probably save a little time by using ImgBurn direct to disc.
Considering the MTBF on modern hard drives, I'd say wear-and-tear isn't really an issue. The drive is more likely to become too small because of increased storage requirements long before it becomes "worn out".

You have the files as well if you use the normal build mode. ;)
You can archive them, burn them again and don't need to mount them first. :D
