First of all - look for a guide here - doom9 has cool guides for almost anything...
Later you can try looking for a guide over at www.vcdhelp.com or this one http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/index.html
hope that helps
take care

Why the hell would you want to encode from DVD to divx and THEN to SVCD? Even if you want both formats, do the DVD->divx and DVD->SVCD conversions seperately!

you have to make your choice
OR you encode from dvd to divx ( nomatter which one 3.11 or 4.1X)
and you ll be able to play it only on a computer
and you could do one cd rip for movie
( for divx sbc, but this is another story)
Or you encode from dvd to vcd or svcd ,
and you can do rip watchable on a stand alone player,
but at the cost of :
low quality for vcd ( 352*240) and 74 min max per cd
high quality for svcd, but 40-55 min max per cd of 74-80 min.
converting from dvd ==> divx ==> (s) vcd will be a loss of time and quality
since vcd and svcd have nothing to do with divx.
for the both way, of course consult the guides ...

well technically you ll need to makes a conversion from divx to svcd
(look on the guides for svcd ripping , and use the avi as source and decode the audio stream to a wav (if you really want to watch it in a standalone player ... but you ll get quality loss).

the easiest way is to use tmpgenc to do it. get virtualdub/nandub to decode the sound to a wav. open tmpgenc and load the avi and the wav, choose the appropriate template, and press go.

I must be missing something, because I cannot figure out how to decode the DIVX/AVI audio into a wave file with Virtual Dub or Nandub. Any ideas.

oberkfell,
Here are the steps.
1. Open your file in VirtualDub.
2. Select Audio -> Full Processing Mode
3. Select Audio -> Conversion
4. Choose Sampling Rate (Whatever you like. i.e. For a VCD-Compliant Audio stream then choose Sampling Rate as 44100, Precision as 16 Bit, Channels as Stereo).
5. Select File -> Save as WAV
Hope this will help.

Look at the tmpgenc guide on doom9.net. I dont know why you need to convert it, i just found that if you didnt it would stuff up. The only thing the guide might not mention is that the settings you use for tmpgenc. Just press load and go to the svcd template and thats about it. Then read the guides on how to split the movie on to seperate cds.
