solutions for linux

Hi folks,

I would like to buy an HDDVD drive or BluRay drive and hook it up to my linux drive. Then, I'll just buy movies at Target or BestBuy. Are there any software players for linux that will allow us to watch HDDVD or BluRay movies on Linux?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You would have to rip it first. And even then, some of your audio options may be limited, for right now atleast.

Got it. I think, the audio is fine with me. Can you guide me on what unix tool I need to use/download to rip them? Then, I'll just use mplayer to play them like how I play 1080p trailers from apple.com.

Which one is a better drive, HDDVD or BR? I read somewhere that HDDVD is winning. So looks like I should just get HDDVD.

Also, looks like the first movie I will buy is 300 or War of the Worlds. :D

DumpHD (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123111) + Mplayer can play right off the disk. Still somewhat buggy, watch for updates.

Thanks foxyshadis, I will try the software once I get a HDDVD drive? Can we buy those hddvd drives at newegg?


EDIT1: I downloaded DumpHD. It was written in java. Am I correct that I will be able to run it in linux as long as I have java support?

EDIT2: I reread your post. Are you saying that with DumpHD + Mplayer, we don't need to rip it? That would be really awesome! If that's the case, I really don't have to buy a dedicated HDDVD player. :)

This is awesome! You gave me the solution I would need in the coming months. :D Using my linux, I will be able to watch the HDDVD movies that I will buy on my CRT projector. :D Although I have a minor problem. My CRT projector only supports 720p and 1080i and not 1080p.
