View Full Version : Editor Supporting Lossless? DirectShow? VfW? AVS?

I'm looking for a video editor that supports input of lossless video (or AviSynth scripts, but that's doubtful at best).

i've already tried pinnacle Studio 11 Plus, but it won't open Lossless MJPEG, CorePNG, HuffYUV, FFV1, or even Lossless x264. The last one will import, but the video is all grayish.

Support for DirectShow or VfW decoding would be best, since that opens up all coodecs.

WMM does DirectShow, but it crashes often and is very bare-bones.

Thanks!

VirtualDub (http://virtualdub.org/), Avidemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126164), ....

Premiere works fine with HuffYUV and Lagarith.

Another vote for Premiere. It's the only editor I found that has good support for some 3rd party codecs.

It's not a perfect editor, but it's not too bad. It IS expensive as hell though :(

You can give the trial a whirl for free at least...

Cost is not an issue :)

Okay, I think I'll buy Premiere. I managed to get my money back for Pinnacle, and sent them various letters of complaint due to their lack of support fr any lossless codec :)

Thanks everyone!

@LoRd_MuldeR: I was looking for something a bit more intuitive/more filters :) I love VDubMod, but I only use it for very simple choosing of scenes and DivX/Xvid encoding. i'm an AviSynth/CLI guy for most stuff :)

You can also download a plugin (http://videoeditorskit.sourceforge.net/) for Premiere that enables Avisynth's script import.

Exactly
And it really works. You should also check DebugMode Framserver (http://www.debugmode.com/frameserver/). Very neat plugin that lets you frameserve from Premiere through fake .avi to any encoder, without rendering it first.

Those two components are _essential_ tools to anyone familiar with AviSynth or more advanced encoding workflow.

Debugmode output to make a dummy AVI can then be read by VirtualDub, and encoded to the lossless codec of your choice.

Premiere AviSynth input also works pretty well, but obviously if you have a slow script, it's not going to work well :)

Debugmode is awesome. Really really awesome. And it's free!!

I had a lot of fun capturing some video game footage from two angles with DScaler into YUY2 Lagarith, deinterlacing it to 60p with AviSynth, making another Lagarith intermediate, and also making a 2x slow motion version using MVTools.

Then I intercut between two angles and their corresponding slow motion versions in Premiere, and used Debugmode to output to lossless again. Big and time consuming, but the end result looked fantastic! I don't think any other NLE could have done this..

Well I tried Premiere Pro CS3... I'm rather ashamed to say that I found the interface annoyingly complex and unorganized.

I just got Vegas 8 Pro and I must say, the interface is very much my style :)

And it supports HuffYUV!
