Don't know if this is a problem with the server, but if I click on the DivX Guides link at http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm I'm sent to the Xmpeg encoding page http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm Is this indeed broken?

I checked 4 servers (even the non production one).. everything is in order. With 3/4 of bogus/incomplete error reports I'm seriously considering just ignoring any further such reports.. I'm sick and tired of wasting my time

Not sure what the problem was but Doom9 is right, the links worked perfectly for me just now.

hmmm...

i just tried the link above and i got to the TSCV-guide, although explorer says its http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm

when i klick on the same link from the main page i get to the correct guides page.

same link.
different pages.
explorer shows the same adress in both cases.

i don't know what is happening here, but somehow something is wrong.

don't beat me! ;) - i tried it three times.

wef.

edit: i forgot to say that none of the images in the TSCV-guide page do show up, i just see the little red x everywhere. when i go to the TSCV-guide from the main page all the images are there.

wef, you among all people should know how useless an error report is without all the info you need to reproduce it.

I HAVE 3 DIFFERENT SERVERS ON 3 DIFFERENT CONTINENTS. 2 OF WHICH HAVE BEEN IN USE FOR A REALLY LONG TIME AND NO RECENT CHANGES IN THE CONFIG WOULD BE KNOWN TO ME. THE 3RD ONE HAS BEEN ADDED BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND HAS ALSO WORKED FINE SO FAR. THE 3 SERVERS OPERATE THE DOOM9.ORG AND WWW.DOOM9.ORG URLS IN ROUND ROBIN MODE WITH A FAILSAVE SWITCHOVER SO BASICALLY YOU CAN'T TELL WHICH SERVER YOU GET UNLESS YOU USE THE URLS SERVERX.DOOM9.ORG, THE 3 PRIMARY SERVERS FOR DOOM9.ORG ARE SERVER1-SERVER3. THERE'S ALSO A FAILSAVE BACKUP SERVER WHICH IS HARDLY EVER UPDATED BUT WOULD KICK INTO GEAR IF ALL THE 3 PRIMARIES WOULD GO DOWN.

Now (the shouting is wanted), in all my time online (more than 8 years.. I've been here when most of the ppl didn't even know what WWW meant, and when we used Mosaic to browse the web) I've never heard about a webserver who could respond to a GET /guides.htm by sending back /mpg/tscv.htm. Neither would I have heard of a browser that would send wrong requests. Clearly, all the links are correct (I checked them on each server, using all access methods known to man to these servers, clearing my browser cache in between, and I even went as far as to change the host file to make sure the true www.doom9.org as you'd get it would be used). results.. I have no problem. So.. the problem lies at your side.. maybe it's time you have a chat with your ISP about proxies, change the browser, scan your system for viruses, or whatever.

That being said I don't want to hear one word more. I'm about to explode, I'm so sick of wasting my time on this shit. A report that doesn't even contain ain IP goes straight to the trash can

Hi Doom9

I well understand your frustration, but let me say I do not quite agree with the way you express it; at least to me it sounds a bit like a flame (please appreciate that English is not my mother language, so I may get some things not the way meant to be by you).

Well, back to the topic, all I can tell you is that what I described as a "broken link" indeed happened. I tried at least 4 times and was always the same. I apologise that I forgot to mention that I was at the job, so probably it was the proxy server that could have screwed up something. When I got home and checked again late evening the same day, everything was fine :)

Thread closed for me, sorry for disturbing and once more my sincere compliments for the hard work you do and the time you invest on the site and the forum.

I think I own you an apology. My outburst above was in no way directed at anybody personally. I merely intended to give you the full facts in a way you won't forget and obviously I shot over my intended goal.

The fact remains that I sometimes create wrong links and I'm glad that people help me fix that. On the other hand, pages like the guide overview page tend not to be changed more than every 3 or more months and chances are highly unlikely that there's something wrong with them without me knowing about it. Furthermore, the mere fact that I have 3 different servers and you not being able to tell where you'll go next time you type doom9.net or doom9.org in your browser makes it rather time consuming to go after such reports. I now tested all 3 servers from my home changing the host file to make sure I got all the 3 servers (and clearing the cache in between), I repeated the same procedure at my parent's place and I checked the servers from school... I'm sure I checked a hundred of different guide links today only to find that each and every one works as intended and on each server. And I don't think that a case of a web server returning a wrong page upon a GET request has ever happened in recorded history though I could be wrong. However, I don't trust any proxy further than I can throw it (I have a huge bad history with a transparent proxy that my ISP used to have).. maybe that's a reason some people are having problems. As for the download problems, download managers could be to blame, and sometimes browsers abort downloads though most people apparently don't know that (in such a case all you'd have to do is restart the download, and keep watching the download window.. you'll see the full size of the download and then if you keep watching it and it suddenly disappears without the bar having reached 100% you know it's a prematurely aborted download and the server is not responsible for these problems).

I will once again revise my contact page to make sure I put the info I just gave you there.

Also, in the future, please please spare me a lot of grief by giving me the url a link originated from (just press back on your browser 2 times, right click on the url you clicked to get on the page that gave you problems, press copy link and paste it to the mail), copy and paste the problematic link and at last ping the server (start - cmd / command, ping www.doom9.org) and give me the IP addy of the server. Consider it like a customer support line, without your serial number they won't give you support and only a detailed description of the problem will ensure a quick and rapid solution of the problem. also don't forget to mention if you indeed use a proxy (all my 3 tests were on computers that go on the net without a proxy, hidden ones included).

Once again, my apologies to anyone I might have offended, I had no intention to. Those who know me for a long while know that I'm a very patient guy and I'm usually very careful with the choice of my words. I even kept on answering help related email and forward people to the forum for months now despite having publicly announced the new contact rules... and so far I have checked every single report about a problem with the site I got. I even seriously pissed off my parents when I was staying at the computer scanning my site for viruses whent he Christmas celebration was supposed to start. Please help me make my life easier in the future by giving me all the info I need and I'll do my best to help.

now.. if we could figure out what exactly causes the problems.. could you list OS, Browser, security patches for the browser, proxy, transparent proxy (you find that out if you have your own webpage, update it, try to access it and it shows the version before the upload)... because we can positively establish that it's not a server problem.

also.. about broken links.. one server transparently switches to ftp for downloads and there's a 1 connection limit plus you can't list directories on the ftp which are 2 reasons not to use any download manager. Within a browser things work just fine.
