Crop black border or keep? Why Hollywood do that?
There have the answer (Subtitle).

There have a lot Divx producer, they crop the black border to save bitrate. If you do that, the subtitile would been display inside the picture.

So you want to do a perfect DVDRip with subtitle for personal store, i recommend you keep it.

I suggest you to crop and to use players like Radlight or Bsplayer.
With these players you can put subtitles anywhere, no need to keep black borders! :)

if you crop, do it right. so be sure that there are no black borders left! not even a few pixels. its the hard edge from movie to black-bar that consumes lots of bandwidth. so if you can't do it exactly or don't want to crop into the picture, forget about cropping...

VobSub can also extend 16:9 movies to 4:3, so that the subtitles are on the borders. This works with windows media player, so you don't need any other player.

I say crop.
I think it might even be faster/encode better, but i'm not sure about that, never tested it.

Recommend go with BSplayer and a SubRip script. Allows for the most flexibility with subtitles.

I'd rather have a *slight* black border around my movie edge, than
have 3+ pixels of *actual footage* removed due to cropping!

I doubt the quality is affected as much as people say. The black is
constant and a single colour, so it's not like the codec is going to
be paying much attention to it.

it's not the black border itself which consumes much bandwidth, it's the hard edge between picture and border. the codec tries to keep the edge and all the contrast between picture and boarders, and this consumes lots of bandwidth! btw. i never noticed anything important happening within those 5 pixels...

If you cropped them away, how could you see anything in those pixels :D

Seriously though, I agree, either crop completely or not at all.
