hello

i m facing the dillema of whether i should use the crf profile or use the HQ Insane profile and change its mode to constant quality

i know the Insane profile would take too much time but thats not an issue

also is there the possibility that using the Insane profile will result in smaller file sizes?

I personally do what you described; changing the HQ Insane profile to CRF 18. The extra time doesn't matter to me since with those settings it only takes me 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours to encode a DVD. I have experimented with all of the HQ profiles on the same DVD and found that file size doesn't drastically change (does change some). The profiles with crazy settings like HQ insane do certainly produce higher quality in a given space which I have clearly noticed when using a fixed bitrate.
And personally I suggest you go with CRF. Often I will get a smaller file with CRF 18 than I would have if I encoded at 1800 kbs. By often I mean about 80 - 90% of the time. And by smaller I mean sometimes as much as 500 MB less. Occasionally CRF will throw me a curve ball and give me a 2. something GB file though.

ok thank you
i ll take the Insane profile though probably set it to crf 22 or 23 which is good enough for me... beyond that i just dont see the difference particularly well and the larger size doesnt help either
