Dvd to Dvd-r ** PLEASE HELP

I am very new to this and I've read everything I can find and am still lost. if I want to copy a dvd to a dvd-r, do I need to encode and decode the bugger. If it is larger than 4.7 gb am I screwed or can I copy just the movie and the soundtrack I want.
