Believe me I have done my homework on this.

I have a desktop shortcut to WMC. When I drag and drop a file into it it launches with a wide window (containing the correctly proportioned video), but the window extends way beyond the screen edges and there are black bands left & right of the video.

How can I avoid this.

The fact that you dare to call it WMC instead of MPC is proof enough that you didn't do your homework.

This might happen if you have messed with the settings in View -> Video Frame.

Otherwise you need to provide more information about the file
that you are playing and the decoder that is being used.

Hi clsid. How embracing to call MPC (terrific player) WMC. It was a slip-up on my part. WMC stands for "Western Mining Company".. a huge company on the Australian Stock Exchange. I also read that MPC arose from WMP. Am I digging a deeper hole for myself?

I certainly have messed in settings View>Video frame, but playing a DVD movie is just fine, so yes, it seems like a file issue.

The files are .mpg of recordings from digital TV via a Nebula/DigiTV USB tuner. I don't know what decoder is used (how can I tell?), but the same files converted to .avi by DivX also open MPC too wide and with black side-bands.

Dragging the seemingly 1metre wide frame around & getting to the [X] and dragging back and forth to and from our projector screen etc. is not cool.

Mind you, when I double-click the picture the screen fills correctly.

I'm using MPC 6.4.9.0 and the above does not appear on my screen using your sequence. My help file also differs in some respects as it does not mention e.g. an option that I have called "snap to edges".

There are so many options, and as some interact the possibilities seem huge. I'm working on it, but as DVDs play with no messing about the idea of it being a particular file variant looks likely to me.

BMW... Sorry.... I just noticed there are TWO "output"s .. the one you are thinking of (in a box when you click Playback) and one that drops down. I see that Zoom thing & will check it out.

YOU LITTLE BEAUTY (as we say in Oz).

Option -> Playback -> Output -> Auto-zoom auto-fit seems to have fixed my problem.
