Can any1 shed some light on this, including aspects such as compression & audio quality ?

They're totally different classes of compression: FLAC is completely lossless (like zip/rar, ofr, mac, tak, alac) while AAC is lossy (like mp3, vorbis, wma, and many others).

Isn't AAC a proprietary format, or am I thinking of something else?

WMA is propritory
