I understand that the WMV9 VCM codec allows the use of WMV9 encoded content in the .avi file format. Is it possible to then convert a .wmv file containing WMV9 content to an avi file without re-encoding the content? I have tried this, but it does not seem to work. I don't see why not, though, since the WMV9 VCM codec should decode the media; or is there some incompatibility between the DMO and VCM versions of the codec?
Currently, I have tried using ASFtools to convert the wmv to avi. WMP11 won't play the resulting avi, though. It downloads the WMV9 VCM codec (even though I already installed it!!), and then refuses to play it. Media Player Classic will play the audio of the resultant avi, but not the video. Vdubmod chokes on the avi with an error as to the files structure.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance. :)
