how 'bout a forum on portable media players

would a subforum for pmp's like creative zens, ipods, sansa players... be useful.

certain file formats work on some and not others so maybe the experts on each player can answer questions about how to get content on it and maybe tutorials for transcoding/ transferring media to their players.

That falls mainly under "Hardware players", they mostly use the same chipsets anyway. Transcoding information is largely part of profiles of the GUIs and therefore appears in "MPEG-4 Encoder GUIs", although it gets brought up elsewhere occasionally. There's so much crossover that even if a forum was started, threads would often be split between there and other forums.
