Sony VP admits to copying DVDs (his own)

There is an interesting quote in this (http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6480077.html?nid=3514) article about "DRM is good, but applied incorrectly" (yeah right).

“I think there is a role for DVD burning,” said Scott Smyers, VP of network and systems architecture for Sony Electronics. “My kids have a lot of DVDs that they play in the car, and after a few trips, they’re often unplayable. So I rip and burn them to protect the originals,” an illegal act that the CSS copy-protection system on DVDs was designed to prevent.

“You can’t deny that consumers want to protect their investment,” Smyers said.

He is absolutely right, of course.:)

Totally agreed.

Anyhow, real piracy could be easily dismished by properly implementing death penalty and strict-assed T.O.S specifying (with luxury of details), what constitues piracy and what doesn't (there's always this risk someone else could pirate your purchase), but the people in charge of the problem are either limited by the law or too much of a pussy.

Thieves deserve no less as they don't care for the disastrous consequences of there actions. Companies, big and small ones, have lost fortunes and even bankcrupted because of piracy; it's about time governments start approaching the subject with iron fist.
