WMV Livestream encoding

Im using Windows Media Encoder to broadcast a livestream from a TV-signal. Specs are 800kbit/s, 640x360, 25 fps, image quality 90.

Since WME only supports single pass for livestreams Im not getting the results I want from my broadcast. The quality just isnt good enough.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do that could make it better?

Change the framerate at 12fps, it will be much better.

Up the bitrate, you could probably double it.

What kind of hardware are you running on?

The first thing you want to do is to up the encoder complexity to the highest value that doesn't drop frames. The default of 1 for a live encode is tuned for speed over quality.

Then, Registry keys!

DQuant Option: I and P frames only
DQuant Method: Regular
In-Loop Filter: On
Overlap Filter: On
Denoise Filter: If source is noisy - you'll want to experiment to find the level that loosk the best
Noise Edge Removal: If you have Line 21 or other edge noise coming into the signal. Of course, better yet to crop that out.
B-Frame Number: 1
Lookahead: 16 (these last two really help with flashes/strobes)

If you can do all the above at Complexity 4 (like you're running a Core 2 Extreme), you can then look at adding:
Motion Search Level: Fixed Integer Chroma (and up to True if you have capacity)
Motion Search Range: Adaptive
Motion Match Method: Adaptive

That's a pretty hot dual-core machine. You'll probably have to stick using two threads, but you should be able to do a pretty nice encode with that.

No way around just jumping in and trying it, of course. I bet you'll be able to Complexity 3 at a minimum, and that plus Lookahead and B-frames will be a nice upgrade. If you can hit that with some CPU headroom to spare, try Complexity 4 and then adding some chroma search.
