I never really found a good answer to this. But I was always curious about it. Doesn't it make more sense to encode a movie all at once instead of a cell by cell basis? And let the encoder make the decision of were more bitrate is needed instead of it being proportional to the original? I still talk to people that still swear by the big 3 method and say its still better. I'm no expert by any means but any info would be appreciated.

What do you mean by a "cell"? Do you mean a frame? In that case, you're wrong--almost all modern encoders make their own decisions as to where the bitrate is needed.

I'm pretty sure that the correct term. Its when dvdrb splits the dvd you are trying to encode into its parts.

Redistribution does basically what you are asking for. You may want to read the many posts about this subject. Redistribution reallocates the bits where they are needed based on a constant quant criterion of the encoder.

Hi-

In my opinion, a definite yes. There are reasons that DVD-RB and Big Three encode by cell (angles, hybrids, flagging it the same as the source), but for ordinary encodes, nothing beats doing the whole thing at one crack. Plus, those 2 programs or sets of programs are crippled in other ways, such as not doing PAL2NTSC encodes, or encoding for different framerates than on the original DVD (silent films, for example, or using the RePAL filter), and no IVTC available in DVD-RB. I know people that use Big Three because that's all they've ever used and all they know. When I teach them how to do it manually, they switch right away.

@manono

Where can I find your method?. Have you written down a tutorial or something similar?.

Regards.

No, but if you want to PM me, I can try and teach you. But you had better have more than a passing familiarity with AviSynth, PGCEdit, and VobBlanker, and know whatever encoder you use backwards and forwards. It's not as if it's my method. Lots of people that prefer to do their backups manually use the exact same or a very similar method.

And I was feeling guilty after writing my earlier post, especially doing it here in the DVD-RB forum. DVD-RB is a remarkable program. I don't have to tell that to those who use it, as they already know. For regular, normal DVDs, it's great. But for those of us that prefer a more "hands-on" experience, or who often work with out-of-the-ordinary DVDs, better results can often be had doing the backups manually.
