Is it normal for my

C2D 6300 @ 2600 GHZ
512 mb ram
Nvidia 7900GS

to encode x264 (megui - HQ-Insane) in 5.4 fps???

That's rather fast actually, what's the input avs script?

ok?
I read this thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=122318&highlight=megui+results

And the fps result there for a e6300 (conroe) are: 41 and 68?

I did a format two days ago, and i think it was faster before??

I used d2v -> avs -> bitrate calculator -> HQ-Insane -> Encode

HQ-Insane is INSANELY SLOW. so yes, it's perfectly normal you get that result. use a faster preset if you want more speed.

the results form that benchmark are not from using the HQ-insane profile. You're comparing apples and oranges.

For that hardware 5.4 fps is very high. I have an E6600 @ 3.6 Ghz and I would get about 9 fps with HQ Insane. So I would expect you to get an even slower encode that what you say here.
Count your blessings. :) Using the HQ Insane profile it took a friend of mine from Monday morning to Friday afternoon to encode 4 hours of video on his work PC last year.

I think it depends the resolution of the input and the output file. I have a Q6600 with a gigabyte DQ6 and 4gb of crucial tracer and i'm only at 1,3fps with the insane preset on a 1080p source. (on vista ultimate)

yes, sure. resolution has a huge impact on the speed. but still ppl must understand if they want more compression the encoding will be exponentially slower.

Its not called HQ-Insane for nothing!

i plan to rename all profiles for the 1.0 release.

Hi sharktooth!
is this the right setting for HQ-Insane?
http://maxupload.com/img/6AFA81FD.png
Turbo Mode and bitrate Lossless should be selected or not?
coz i change some setting and i don't remember what was the default Insane setting.
+ what is the good setting for HQ-Insane to get best result out of it?

yeah. update your megui though;)
you want it more insane?
set ME to Exhaustive, rise the ME-Range to 32 and b-frames to 16.

Hmn. as i am new to the world of x264, after reading fourms, found that insane gives good result.
and wanted to know from you which settings you recommend to get best possible quality out of it?
and when i change setting for ME-Range to 32 and b-frames to 16.
what actually change?

there's something most users have to understand.
rising compression (hence setting the encoder to the max capabilities) will usually have a negative impact on the quality since the codec tends to drop more data to save space/rise the compression.
for example x264 works best with grainy or very detailed sources with --subme 1.
Using insane settings for rising compression will only help if you have a very low bitrate to respect. In other cases, when you're not constrained or have a sufficient space/bitrate, it's better having faster settings coz final visual quality will be better...
so the codec settings and quality depends on what you really need in every single encoding and there are no universal "best" settings nor "best" quality... since the latter depends on your personal preferences.

Ok,thanks.
I did a test with a setting as you said for 1:11 min clip with 430 bitrate, and i get fps about 1.10. what you say on this?

Sharktooth

it's damn slow... are you sure you need "insane" settings?

well, i'm encoding most of the time with bitrate's about 390-650, and want to get the good result, don't have much experince on the profiles of x264, which one should i chose.or what i change in insane or any other to make it faster, but i did few test with HQ-Slowest that was about 4-8 fps and today when i did with insane it was 4-5 fps.
i have AMD Athlon with 3200+ (2,20 GHz)
any Recommendation will be great.

One thing to remember is that x264 profiles (like almost everything in this world) are subject to law of diminishing returns. This means that going going from HQ-Slow to HQ-Slower should give quite significant boost in quality and acceptable loss of encoding speed, while going from HQ-Slower to HQ-Insane should give quite small increase in quality and huge decrease in encoding speed.

For most users the best compromise IMO is HQ-Slower (unless you have a quad core processor which will work really fast with --me esa).
