The source is H.264 .mp4 (avc1, 852x480 not sure if that is 720p or 480p) in which I encoded myself of a home made video but I lost it so I"m stuck with the .mp4. and i want to convert to be playable on my divx dvd player. i already have k-lite codec's h.264 codec to play back h.264s @ 720p & hopefully to encode. I want to "simply convert" from .mp4 format to .avi format without any additional or unnecessary changes like resolution. I'm thinking of tmpg Xpress 3.0, ateme, nero digital, or mainconcept but is there a better program out there for mpeg-avc H.264 video quality conversion wise?

avc2avi can mux Raw H.264 streams into AVI container, right. But the resulting AVI will definitely not play on a "DivX" DVD Player, because such players don't support H.264 video - no matter which container it's stored in! If you want to play it on your DVD Player, you will have to convert the video from H.264 to MPEG-4 ASP (DivX, Xvid, etc). You could use Avidemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126164) for that purpose: Simply open your H.264 MP4 file, set Video to "MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid)", set Audio to "MP3 (LAME)", set Format to "AVI" and then click File -> Save -> Save Video -> "Output.avi" ...

BTW: Don't ask "What is the best ...", because that's a Forum rule violation ;)

Thank you and good to know but the searches was unable to come up with "H.264 to divx" or "H.264 to avi". :)
