again i am not asking which is best im just tring to see which is more widely used as i am thinking of leaving slackware as i am getting fed up with fighting to get things running and such (altho it still kicks ass as my web/ftp server)

i have used ubuntu and do like the apt-get thing but i dont like the fact that all the packages are pre-built, i know i could recompile them but have not done so on there as im unsure as to the procedure, with slackware i can do what i like but that in itself causes issues as not everything works right out the box.

Gentoo and the likes are missing in the list...and Ubuntu is based on Debian. :)

many distros are based on it but that doesnt make them debian - as to gentoo - yes i forgot to add that one

if you add sabayon i could vote... ;)

far too many distros for one man to keep track of - if i knew how to edit the poll i would add them

PC @ home -> Debian
Servers -> Debian
PS3 (not mine ..) -> Ubuntu
WRAP boards -> Voyage linux (debian)
so my choice is debian ;-)

Zenwalk :)

Think of it as a slackware that doesn't need much fiddling to get things done. ;)

ubuntu because it was the first distro i found that mailed an install disc to you free of charge.
And after playing around with it i found it easier to use the other distros i tried before.

uuuh, everyone will have to decide to vote between ubuntu and debian, I guess ;)
Where are Fedora, PClinuxOS (number one on DW now) MEPIS and others ;)

Distrowatch is an accurate enough ressouce on "marketshare", but I suspect Doom9 folks would prefer more specialized distros like Ubuntu Studio

OpenSUSE is fastest here, but Ubuntu wins wider support and more active community. Fedora lost its mind and way with users, so this isnt even surprising

thats because red hat can't con enough people to support them anymore

I am on Zenwalk right now, but my love of course is Gobolinux. I laugh about the "FHS is superior" approach of other distributions blocking their ways to think (Gobolinux is FHS compliant tho) ;) (unfortunately Gobolinux lacks developers with enough free time right now and still some more docu on the wiki, thats why I recommend other distributions...)

PCLinuxOS is very nice too btw

PCLinuxOS isnt brillliant for the number of packages in its repos. Otherwise its a good choice.

Which Linux distro to use. Great question. I think anybody who runs a Linux distribution would have their own favor.
So We can only tell you what we like. So I like KDE and I like the way repositories work in debian. Ive tried SUSE, Fedora, Deian etch, Kubuntu, Debian lenny and switched over to Debian sid.

Ubuntu rocks in every way, but for the fact that its multimedia playing ability has been crippiled, and only with a internet connection can we correct this... i found NO deb packages on the net which can just be downloaded and installed to make ubuntu proper(vlc + xine + win32 codecs + good codecs + bad codecs + ugly codecs + other gstreamer codecs + ffmpeg + dependencies of all the above, assuming the ubuntu is a fresh install, off the CD(like how most are).

my horrible ram ment that I couldn't use opensuse live cd, and mandriva ONE looked like a piece of eyecandy, while vector linux 5.1 soho was a tiny and perfect OS. most others like dyne:bolic, nubuntu, edubuntu, damn small linux, slax kill bill, etc appeared tooooo specialised and complicated for general use. hence I stuck with windows xp, and forever attempt in vain to connect to the net in ubuntu or try to get some deb package to remove the restrictions.

I just hope we get a new well defined and highly usable installer package system for linux that does not lead us into dependency hell. compiling from sources is another thing that scares linux N:scared::scared:BS.

x264 core:56 svn-679
Infile can be raw YUV 4:2:0 (in which case resolution is required),
or YUV4MPEG 4:2:0 (*.y4m),
or AVI or Avisynth if compiled with AVIS support (no).
Outfile type is selected by filename:
.264 -> Raw bytestream
.mkv -> Matroska
.mp4 -> MP4 if compiled with GPAC support (yes)

x264_20070924-1_i386.deb (Ubuntu) (Package was provided by myself)

It is easy to provide packages. Try it.
