subtitles creat black bars on the top and bottom of my movie

I have a movie I have encoded with MeGUI and x264 and all is well with it until I put the subtitle files in the directory with it. I made the subtitle files with MeGUI also using the VobSubber. Once I put the subtitle files in the directory black bars appear at the top and bottom of the movie during playback. It's not much of a problem but it is an annoyance.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

VobSub will by default add borders - go into DirectVobSub configure and set it however you like.
