PC System: What do i need for HD Movies?

Hello,

i want to playback a 720p hd movie. I conected my HDTV to my graphic card and extended the desktop to my tv. Now, i want to play a movie on my tv. That is my aim.

My System:

P4 3,4Ghz HT
2GB DDR2-Ram 667Mhz
NVidia Geforce 8 GTS
Soundblaster Live!
Windows Vista Ultimate

Software: PowerDVD 7 Ultra, CoreAVC

I tried everything the last days. CoreAVC, PowerDVD Codec, Haali Splitter, LazyMan, ffdshow, MPC, VLC, ac3filter

Maybe i installed to much, but i couldn't play my movie smoothly. After a few minutes the ton is asyncrone and the movie stops for a second.

So my question is:

What software and codecs would play my movies without problems? I want to use my graphic card to support the playback ( i bought it for this reason ) and i want to play the movie on my tv over the extended Desktop. The sound goes trough spdif to my sourround system. This seems to work very fine.

So what is the minimum and beste requirement to play my movies?

What format is the movie file in you're trying to play?

Are you sure the codecs you installed are actually doing anything? Post a CCCP Insurgent (http://www.cccp-project.net/download.php?type=cccpi) Test Render and Media Info on the file.

The programm says that no codec pack is installed, System classes: Direct Show and a list of filters.

CoreAVC isn't being used, which is probably your problem. Check the merits of both, or just disable ffdshow's H.264 decoding. Try reinstalling CoreAVC just to be safe.

The quartz.dll not found message makes me o.O' but if it's working it's working. (If it wasn't there you wouldn't be able to play anything at all.)

i disabled the ffdshow h.264 decoding and now the test render show that it uses the CyberLink Decoder from my PowerDVD.

What should be better? CoreAVC or PowerDVD decoder?

CoreAVC is slightly more efficient in terms on CPU decoding, but cannot use the hardware acceleration provided by the 8600GTS, so you should be getting a big performance boost by using that with the cyberlink decoder if it's working. How much CPU is it using now?

Sorry to hijack the topic, but I'm using CoreAVC right now simply because I was under the impression that it outperforms other codecs even when using hardware acceleration, has this since changed?

My GPU is 7900 GTO 512MB (which I'm aware is not fully PureVideo2 like the 8600 is, but does have PureVideo), Core2 X6800 CPU, 2GB DDR2. Just trying to decide if I should be ditching CoreAVC in favour of the PDVD codec.

EDIT - Had a bit of a tinker, both CoreAVC and Cyberlink w/ DVXA use ~20% CPU when playing the 720p mkv I tested, CoreAVC occasionally spiking as low as 11%.

Heh.. with a X6800 and CoreAVC, I think your system will have all the power it needs to do 720p and 1080p decoding. I have an Opteron 170 that gets along perfectly decoding 720p streams I've encoded without CoreAVC installed, so your system should do fine as well.
