Title Menu in VMGM PGC 6 doesn't work!

I have authored a simple title menu (still frame with 2 buttons, in only one LU.) This title menu is called almost immediately when the DVD starts. It works fine with all soft players, but in my KISS and my XiRON standalones, it is simply skipped (and button 1 is assumed.)

BTW, I have verified the original VIDEO_TS.IFO with IfoEdit, and everything seems fine. PGC 6 is correctly marked as an Entry PGC.

The only thing that might be non-standard compliant is that the Title Menu PGC was PGC 6 of the VMGM. So I have moved it at the first position (as PGC 1) with PgcEdit's Remap PGCs function, burned another DVD, and now everything works fine! Very strange!

IIRC, I have always seen the Title Menu PGCs at the first position in all commercial DVDs I have analysed.

Hence the questions:
Is it required that the Title Menu PGC is the first PGC in the LU?
Does a similar requirement exist for the Root Menu PGC in the VTSM?

It may seem for compatibility, checked a quarter of commercial DVD movies, all of them seem to follow the same rule.

That should be allowed (otherwise there is no reasons for the existance of the entry_type field itself...)...

Are you positive there are no other navigation or authoring problems ?

Assuming there are no copyright issues, could you upload the DVD somewhere?

I can easily made a check with the Philips Verifier...

Well, there might be some non-standard compliant things, but I haven't discovered them yet. But I am sure that the only thing I did to make it work properly is to move the Title Menu entry PGC at the top of the VMGM.


I did this DVD this way:

I have used PgcEdit's import functions to join two small DVDs, preserving the original VTSM menus, and the VMGM of DVD 1.

Then I did a simple DVD Selection menu with Lab. Only its VMGM is interesting for me. It has originally 2 PGCs: the first one, the Title Menu, is a dummy, and the second PGC contains the still menu with 2 buttons.

To preserve the original VMGM PGCs (5 dummies) of the compilation, I have modified the DVD created with Lab before importing it. I have removed the first dummy, and assigned the Title Menu entry to the only remaining PGC, with the buttons, and deleted the commands. Then, I have created the 5 dummies in the VMGM, and moved them on top so that they occupy the same position than in the original DVD, and finally I have copied the original commands.
Doing so, I have also moved the Title Menu PGC at the bottom. Hence the problem.

Then, I have imported that modified VMGM in the compilation, added some dummies at the bottom of the VMGM, and modified the VM commands manually to call the Title Menu when the DVD starts (after having visited Title 1 to create a valid resume point.)

It seems the error we are discussing about is the 4098 one:

The Menu_ID was illegal in combination with the Entry_type (in VMGM_PGC_CAT).
This error is reported when:
- The Menu_ID does not equal '0000b'when the Entry_type equals '0b' (Not Entry PGC).
- The Menu_ID does not equal '0010b'when the Entry_type equals '1b' (Entry PGC).

The error is in menu 1.
There is an entry_PGC flag set without title menu flag.
0x80 has to be 0x00
Possible values here are 0x00 or 0x82 only
Btw my Ifoedit mess up hex and dec values in this table

I agree. Indeed, PGC 1 is still specified as an entry PGC, although it is not the Title Menu anymore. It might be a bug in PgcEdit.

PGC 6, the real Title Menu, is correctly specified as being an Entry PGC.

I will fix this PGC 1 problem with IfoEdit, burn another DVD, and verify if it's sufficient for my standalones...

I'm even more confused now! The XiRON recorder has no problem with the new menu any more, but the KISS still plays the PGC 1 instead of the Title Menu PGC 6. My Sony plays the new DVD perfectly, but I haven't tried the buggy version with that player, as it cannot read the DVD+Rs any more.

I have also found another bug in the KISS. It doesn't allow using the Return button in menu PGCs with a non-zero GoUpPGCN link. I haven't tried the Resume value.

Since this player is really full of bugs, I suppose that my menu is correct now. However, as a precaution, I will reset the Title menu as PGC 1 before burning the final DVD. I'm sure the KISS can play that!

I have also verified my code, and it's indeed a bug in PgcEdit that caused the 0x80 value in the first PGC. The Entry PGC flag was not cleared.

:pCertainly. It's pure (expensive) crap!
But I like it, as it's a good example of a totally non-standard player, and it can help to build DVDs that can be played on many players. BTW, it's a Linux Embedded OS that is used internally in the KISS. I hope that real Linux software players are better!

Is it required that the Title Menu PGC is the first PGC in the LU?

I've never seen it in commmercial DVDs.
But now I remember and confirmed output of DvdReMakePro's Merge.
Its TitleMenu is last PGC of VMGM, not first.
I've not noticed the problem on hardplayer and softplayer at least which I have.
Anyone can confirm it by Demo version (which is restricted to be reduced to 15 second each cell).
