I have been making tons of nice dual layer coasters lately. In fact, I have yet to make a DL burn that actually works.
SO here goes.......
Had a NEC 3520 burner, only supported +R DL discs. But that drive died typical, since it was made by Sony.
Replaced it with a brand new Lite-On SATA drive that reads and writes ALL formats as best I can tell, but most importantly, supports both +/- DL dics. all attempts were burned at slowest speed I could set.
Have tried numerous attempts to burn discs. Both data and video.
Software attempted....
Nero
DVD Shrink
Clone DVD
Imgburn
and pgcedit or something like that.
Media used:
Sony
Verbatim
Memorex
Ritek
Generic
All coasters.
On 3 occasions, I managed to burn discs on Memorex that after checking the disc with CDC Check and it said no errors, all 3 discs seized up while playing them.
More coasters.
Dual Layer can't be that damn difficult can it?
Anyone with a suggestion? a new program to try, a nice definitive guide on something you know works well????
Anyone?
thanks

Hi!
As has been stated numerous times at these forums and many others, thusfar, the ONLY consistently winning combination of DL burning media and burning software is Verbatim DL DVD+R and IMGBurn...

From what I've read, SATA optical drives are only stable with certain motherboards.

AS I stated, I did use search before I asked, and read quite a few of the threads. I did see ImgBurn mentioned, a few times, I also saw NEVER use Nero. I downloaded and used ImgBurn, but with some convoluted routine with another program called pgcedit.
I'll pop out and pick up some more verbatim's this afternoon and give it another go, using ImgBurn only I presume is the recommendation.
@CWRO3: SATA Drive incompatibilities are an OLD topic. like 2004 I think. Only references I could find to any SATA optical issues after googling the subject all dated back to when Plextor drives were the only SATA based DVD/RW drives out there.
Add to that the only motherboards that seemed to be having issues were those with Intel chipsets in conjunction there were references to Plextor using a SATA to PATA converter for the drives.
I'd say lack of recent threads on the subject makes SATA drives pretty safe.

ok, so just curious, what use are -R discs really?

If you're referring specifically to DL DVD-Rs, they're presently of very little use regarding DVD backups (I'm sure they're just fine for data backups).
If you're talking about SL DVD-Rs, they're just fine for ALL types of backup, including DVDs - and some older players and DVD-ROMs will ONLY recognize DVD-Rs...

Correct - Verbatim DL DVD+Rs and IMGBurn directly (NOT via PGCEdit)... PgcEdit is useless to burn a DVD since v2 of ImgBurn, as it has implemented everything necessary to burn DL DVDs, but PgcEdit is still compatible with the newest versions of ImgBurn, and is certainly not responsible of your bad burn. Most probably, the problem is caused by poor media quality or -R technology. I agree that +R media should be always used, at least to burn DLs.

take note in my very first post, I listed the different media types I purchased and used to burn files. I also stated that i tried both +R and -R discs.
Still got coasters, so media is clearly not the issue.
FYI, after downloading and using ImgBurn ONLY, not fired off of another program that to me seemed pretty useless, I have burned and played a number of discs with Verbatim, Memorex and some generics I had left over.
All passed validation and verification checks both with ImgBurn and CDCheck. And the real test, me putting it in and watching it
start to finish, no freezing, skips, lock ups, seizing, weird glitches.
Here I was beginning to think DL was a fairy tale. One would think in 2007, we would have programs that actually work.

yeah, I think I would have been just a bit happier though if I had known that DL was so damn touchy about burning, media and even programs that are supposed to work...DON'T.
Would have saved me around 40.00 in coasters and wasted money.
But.... all seems well, and ImgBurn is at least humorous to use. I like the little pop ups, "Hey dumbass, you didn't set such and such, I'll do it for you this time"
Next milestone..... Burning HD-DVD :)

If you're bored, open the ripped dvd with PGCedit, remove the layer break and then open the folder with IMGburn to "attempt" a dual-layer burn...:D
