View Full Version : Making smaller video file from larger file?

Hi. I was wondering if there was a way to make smaller files from larger Xvid encoded files? I have a PDA phone that can run videos and now I'm encoding both a larger 700MB Xvid file and a smaller 300MB Xvid file for the phone (fixed width of 320 pixels). For my older files prior to the purchase of my phone, I only made 700MB files and I was wondering if there was a quick way to use these 700MB files to make 300MB movie files without having to rerip and encoding. I know that I can actually do this with MP3 files (from higher to lower bitrate to save space). I was wondering if there is a similar function for video files. If there is a way, is it faster and is there a freeware version to do this? (If not, then I might as well rerip and encode which is free at this time) Does AutoGK provide this function (I don't see it as an option)? Thanks.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I wasn't sure where to put it.

AutoGK alone won't work without re-encoding the file, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable can help you in using the first-pass .stats file from the 700MB encode for creating a second-pass only encode for a 300MB file. It might be easy to do with AgkPal if you can load a single-pass encode, but set Xvid to run 2-pass (second pass) and load the first pass .stats file.

Just reencode from your 700 MBs, there won't be much difference in quality.

I'm sorry, but I don't know how. Which program can I use?

You can use virtualdub(mod) + avisynth. But if you want something easier, try MediaCoder:

Thanks. That worked. I am having trouble with trying to create my own extension, but I'm using the Creative Zen format which works fairly well for me.

Open any Explorer window, click Tools > Folder options, click the View tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types." You can then simply change the extension as part of the filename.
