DivX has announced a new network player in conjunction with D-Link.

Press release (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/070831/20070830006059.html?.v=1)

No details on codec support just a release date in the fourth quarter of 2007 for Europe. There is a photo of the unit and what appears to be the UI on DivX's site (http://www.divx.com/company/partner/connected.php) and it looks pretty good to me at least.

Hopefully the player is not just limited to DivX and D-Link will add H.264 support.

its a bit useless with out x264.. DivXHD is like 2x the size of x264..

DivX should update they codec to x264 and move on with the times. Old DivX for sd movies and new DivX x264 for HD

Out of the box the device supports DivX, XVID and on the fly WMV transcoding.

The platform does, however, support plugins to extend format compatibility. As long as the particular hardware has the horsepower, it can be made to support a wide variety of formats.

Let me know if you any other questions.

I would be happy with MPG support. x264 would be great also.

Anyone know if this will be a US product, or how much it will cost?

We don't have a US OEM yet, but we're working on it. In Europe the price is 189 Euros, or 129 pounds in the UK for the D-Link device. Already available for pre-order. ;)

seems as though there is a way to get it to play other stuff (http://www.kamiwa.de/en/node/11) :)

So the PC is the video server which sends DivX encoded material to the set-top box? ... Well, simple and flexible. Sounds worth a deeper investigation. I was always disappointed that DVB receivers don't even have MPEG block filters, an on-the-fly HQ recode could be the workaround I'm looking for.

Seems a bit tricky to get it to support AC3. Here's a how to (http://www.kamiwa.de/de/node/14)!

I find myself searching through this list (http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=TwoCC) a lot.

@kamiwa
yes, AC3 and DTS for that matter have to be worked out. I am not a big fan of downmixing, especially since passthrough is supported. Maybe some changes to the server will accomplish this.
