What do you mean by artifacts. Since you said recordings, I'm thinking you mean transmission errors?

You can load it in DGIndex and play it. When an error is found a message is printed in the Info box on the Information dialog.

A message just pops up saying an exception has been found then asks to continue, is this right?

Well that's a really bad kind of stream error. :) If you want to give me the stream fragment, I can make it report and recover more gracefully. Otherwise, just say yes to continue.

@tolkien assuming you're talking about MPEG2, mpeg2repair will scan your program and ID problems in a log. I have used it to scan two recordings of the same program, in order to assure I have picked the "cleanest" version for archiving.
VideoReDo Plus also has a repair function, but TMK does not identify "artifacts" whereas mpeg2repair will expose areas of pixellation (sometimes very subtle).
